Locally Operated, Family-Owned Business Since 1966
After pumping propane for another company since 1947, my grandfather, Bledsoe Harwell, and two of his brothers-in-law, Leon Carter and Herman Smith, started Blue Flame Gas Co in 1957 in Bowden Junction, Georgia. They rented a small room in the town post office.
Leon continued to work at his "day job" because there was not enough income for all three of them. They purchased two used bobtails (trucks to haul propane) and bought a small piece of land on the railroad, where the "Bowden-Doogie," a small train engine, pulled the rail cars of propane in. My granddad and his brothers would unload the propane at night and deliver it during the day.
They eventually split up the company, and my grandfather opened Blue Flame Gas Co in Griffin, Georgia in October 1966. He took on a partner, Joe Steele, in 1972, and my father, David Harwell, became a partner in 1977. My Father purchased Joe's shares in 1993. In 2019 my Father bought out his only remaining partner - my uncle, Danny Harwell - to become the sole owner of the company.
My Father passed away in 2023 leaving the company to me. I have worked at Blue Flame Gas Company since I was a teenager and have been an integral contributor to daily operations ever since I graduated college. It is a honor to be taking over as the new President and Owner of Blue Flame Gas Company where I can continue to honor the dream of my Father and Grandfather before me. I look forward to many years of serving the community that has supported my family for generations!
We still strive to give you the same personal service that we have been giving since my grandfather first opened the company. Today, we have two offices in Pike and Upson County.
